SMIAC

The Soil Mechanics Information Analysis Center (SMIAC) is one of eight Corps of Engineers information centers managed or sponsored by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). It was established in 1966 to acquire, analyze, evaluate, condense, and disseminate the world's literature in the subject areas of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, engineering geology, seismology, geophysics, hydrogeology, and earthquake engineering. Work is directed primarily toward Corps of Engineers civil works and military missions. Priority is given to agencies of the DoD, although services are available to the scientific community, subject to facility and manpower limitations.
The Center has two employees: a part-time director and a part-time secretary. Technical assistance in answering specific inquiries is provided as needed by experienced engineers and scientists on the staff of the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) at ERDC-Vicksburg. The Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, provides limited Civil Works funding for the SMIAC.
